Ocado launches search for 100 of Britain’s brightest tech talent to step up its technology innovation
- Ocado Technology creates 100 technology jobs in Hatfield and 50 in Krakow, Poland
- The technology division behind online supermarket ocado.com employs guerrilla recruitment tactics to hire the best software engineers, designers and technicians
- New recruits to spearhead its game-changing innovation with robotics, machine learning, cloud development, preparing for international expansion and big data
27/11/2013: Ocado Technology, the technology division that powers the world’s largest online-only grocery retailer ocado.com, has launched its biggest ever recruitment drive to find 100 of Britain’s brightest technology talent. The new hires, along with a further 50 in its Krakow office in Poland (150 in total), will help drive its game-changing innovation into robotics, machine learning, cloud development, preparing for international expansion and big data.
“While many other companies are outsourcing projects, we’re focusing on the long-term goal of recruiting permanent, full-time software engineers and other specialists who are leading the world in their respective fields,” explained, Paul Clarke, director of technology, Ocado.
Designers, software engineers and technicians are being offered the opportunity to revolutionise the way people shop. Based in Hatfield, potential recruits will have the opportunity to join various teams including the analytics and optimisation, business support systems and Customer Fulfilment Centre (CFC) simulation teams.
As part of the recruitment drive, Ocado launched a guerrilla recruitment campaign to tempt technology experts from London’s most high profile firms. Over 150 employees in the technology divisions of companies such as UBS, Skype and Amazon were targeted with a series of clean job advertisements sprayed onto the doorsteps of their offices, inviting them to apply for a position at Ocado Technology.
Applied overnight using a high powered water jet and a series of stencils, the “clean” job adverts feature comments such as “Fed up of being a drone? Try programming one instead” and “Allowed to pitch ideas to your CEO? Then implement code in 2 hours? Thought not.”
Potential recruits were also invited to an Ocado Technology recruitment pop-up at Leather Lane market during their lunch break to find out more about the division and how to apply for roles. You can view the video here.
In summing up the benefits of working at Ocado Technology, Paul Clarke, said: “When most people think of Ocado, they think of the world’s largest online-only grocery retailer, not realising we’re one of the country’s biggest technology employers transforming an entire industry.
“In addition to the work-life benefits of working for Ocado, our employees tell us that being able to make a real difference is what gets them excited. For example, they can pitch an idea in the morning, start working on the code in the afternoon and before they know it, that code’s been approved and uploaded. This business and technical agility is critical to our success.”
