Representing Ocado on the visit were Greg Hutton, head of Ocado Construction and Engineering, and Jonathan Bomphray, Dordon CFC2 general manager. They were accompanied by members of the Dordon engineering operations team led by Chris Revill who offered the guests a glimpse into their day-to-day activities and answered questions about the skills and knowledge required to be an engineer at Ocado.

The tour was organised to mark the beginning of the Year of Engineering campaign, a year-long initiative that aims to challenge the outdated perceptions of the engineering profession and get more young people to consider a career in engineering.

The visitors were offered a detailed explanation of our goods-to-person systems where high-speed shuttles and conveyors bring crates of products to our personal shoppers who then pick and pack the grocery items in a few seconds.

Once the tour ended, Ms Ghani addressed the school group and encouraged everyone to consider a career in engineering. Highlighting benefits such as increased job security, better pay and an opportunity to change the world, she made a passionate plea for students – and especially girls – to look at the full spectrum of opportunities, from apprenticeships to university degrees. Ms Ghani also said girls shouldn’t be afraid to explore physics, maths, chemistry or other STEM-related subjects as these can ultimately lead to a career in engineering.

Encouraging more young people to enter the engineering profession is essential to ensuring the growth and development of new technologies and businesses in the UK.
